The reason I’ve chosen the path of self-publishing and why I’m still looking for a literary agent.

Many people often ask me why I’ve chosen the path of self-publishing. It’s a very hard question, but after so many months the time has come to answer and describe my thoughts. As many of you know, Antara is a book written and illustrated by me. There isn’t any similar style of book in the market. There are children’s picture books and graphic novels, but scarcely someone would come across an illustrated novel. The rarity of this kind of book has prevented me to find a literary agent to represent me. If in the US there are 1000 literary agents, only 30 of them would represent author/illustrators, and the ones I’ve contacted rejected my book because that kind seemed unusual to them. A lot of people say that excuse was unfair, and yes, I believe the same thing as well. But life is unfair many times (so I’m not going to nag about that). In the process, I tried to contact a few publishing houses directly but that turned out to be impossible; No one of the large publishing houses accepts unsolicited submissions.

Therefore, there was but one solution, to self-publish my book, so that Antara wouldn’t wreck. Sometimes I read articles where some are against self-publishing, but they would do the same thing if they were in my position. In no occasion would I let my dream fade. I worked very hard for Antara; the illustrations took me almost 2 years, I wrote the story in Greek and I paid for the Greek-to-English translation myself, and all of this because I didn’t want my effort to be wasted.

Some would-be writers ask me what they should choose, self-publishing or traditional publishing. Many self-published authors would reply that they don’t know, I’m going to propose traditional publishing. What for? Self-publishing definitely has some pros, but there are times that I feel like I’m going to burst and abandon everything; in the end, however, I always come to my senses. Since Antara was published, I work hard on a daily basis to promote my book totally by myself, and this is exhausting and difficult. No, I’m not nagging about that, I’m just noting that the promotion is the most difficult aspect of self-publishing. It needs a lot of continuous nerve, time and effort. So if anyone asks if I’m in favor of traditional publishing, I’d say ‘yes’, simply because I’d like someone else to undertake the burden of promotion and other things in instead of me. I’d like a professional editor to correct my books, and I’d like a literary agent to promote my name and my work, because it’s impossible to do everything by myself. I would just like to focus on writing and painting; that would be much better. That’s why the path of self-publishing is a difficult one.

All of the above have led me to a huge dilemma for my next book. I’m thinking to begin writing a new story, and I really want to do it. However, the question arises: should the third book be illustrated or not? As I’ve explained, the reason that most agents rejected Antara was the book’s category and the kind of my illustration. So, if I start sending queries to agents, I will have again the same results, and I don’t want to get through that again. But if some people bought Antara, they did because of the illustration, that’s mostly what made the book special, and that’s what many reader reviews say. Therefore, I’m truly torn on this issue, and I don’t know what to do. The only thing I can do is to mention that even if I chose the difficult path of self-publishing, I’m still looking for a literary agent or publisher to make my life easier.

Yesterday Ι painted live in Exhibition of Children's and Young adults books, was a wonderful evening, something different for me, because I painted live with traditional materials for the first time in front of a large audience. Hello everyone,

A quick update for a few news.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, I'm sorry that I can't reply to all of you. I'm working on a few new projects and my time is limited.

Regarding my last work 'The melody of heaven update', I received a lot of messages saying that the hands that I added in the clouds look a bit spooky. Hm, my intention was kind of different.. I didn't have any intention to make the clouds look haunted. I just wanted to show that the clouds are enchanted from the music of the fairy and come to life.

I receive a large number of messages from here and other communities I'm into. Everyone asks about the the progess of my book, and I'm really thrilled by your interest and your incredible support. Believing in something before you even see it is simply magic, and that gives me a lot of strength. So many things have happened around this issue, and I don't want to write my feelings again in public about this matter. Things have changed 360 degrees. I have lost the right path and finally I found it again. Now I'm on a good track in making the right steps in order to get my book published. I hope that someday the time will come to write good news regarding my book. I think positively and everything is going to be alright. I'm sure that in life when you want something so much and believe in it, in the end you succeed.

The publishing of a book is a very difficult task, but definitely it's not impossible if you have faith and hopefulness.

I want your brightness

The darkness envied the beauty and light of a fairy. One day it killed her, trying to steal her light. Believing that it had succeeded, the powers of nature proved it wrong. They thwarted it in order to give the fairy's life back. To return again to the forest its soul and light.

This work is purely symbolic, the clean air, the forests, the seas, they are the life for all of us, we shouldn't destroy them.

I'm so glad because i'm featured in one of the best magazines about cg art in China.
I gave for this a interview , ( and is the first time that i like so much the questions!)
" The Blue Romantic of Aegean " is the title for the article, and i'm so honored for this, and really
I appreciate this title for the cg world magazine , it's a big price for me.
Also i want to say a big thank you to the editors for this big support, and for my friend Eleni Tsami that helped me with the translation.

New Era

New Era and i feel realy wonderful and i'm really excited. The past year was too much
difficult for me for everything but first from all i had too much difficulties as a professional artist. The 2010 is really better year for me, i'm working like a mad in three jobs, my work as a teacher for kids is very difficult, the little kids isn't easy work hehe:). Btw i feel good, and I'm thinking positive and this is more important. The past year I tried to become better as digital painter, and i tried to learn English, i think my English is better now, no perfect ,but i understand everything. What do you think?:) . Now i want to make a small break ( from my different paintings), just means that i want to give time to continue my storybook. I should to finished my story and the concept art for this, it's very important for me because is something only mine and absolutely personal. is my big dream and i want to become a good artist from this book.I hope the next six months my book be ready. Also thank you all the people for the support, i still to continue to watch the cg sites and the progress from the other artists. Also i wish you all good luck for the Expose 8. I hope to see and my works there!
